Abstract In the early seventies, a gender service for transgender and gender-diverse adults was started in the VU medical center in Amsterdam, the Netherlands. Since the beginning of the 2000s, Dutch clinicians have expanded care for transgender individuals and started to use puberty suppression for transgender and gender-diverse adolescents. In 2006, a first version of the so-called Dutch approach was published.1 This approach has been further developed and has now become the standard approach for transgender adolescents in many countries around the world.2 What is the Dutch approach and how is care for transgender youth currently administered in the Netherlands? In the first part of this lecture, Dr. van der Miesen will discuss the origins of the Dutch approach as well as the scientific evidence. In addition, clinical challenges regarding capacity to consent and mental health of transgender adolescents will be discussed. In the second part of the lecture Dr. Lai will elaborate on the common intersections of sexual and gender diversity and autism (as well as other forms of neurodivergence, which is less known so far based on available data). Multiple studies have identified a significant over-representation of autism among transgender and gender-diverse children, adolescents and adults. Estimates suggest that up to 22.5% of transgender adolescents are autistic and there is an over-representation of transgender identities among autistic people. In this lecture, prevalence rates of the intersection and suggested underlying hypotheses will be reviewed.
